Let the Games begin

OPINION – ALI CUPPER

I WOULD love the Commonwealth Games to come to regional Victoria in 2026 and I’ll be doing everything I can to help make that happen.

The idea is innovative and inspired. It would be an extraordinary boon for our economy and a great way to raise the profile of our region as a place to live, work and invest.

If Victoria’s bid is successful, the main benefactors will be the towns lucky enough to host events because hosting rights bring about immense public investment opportunities.

Fortunately, we can confidently throw our hat into the ring of this conversation because of the game-changing investment we’ve seen over the past few years.

The Mildura Sporting Precinct is continuing to transform, and I can’t wait to see what the State Government’s $10 million investment will do for stage 2.

By the end of this year, we’ll have one of the newest state-of-the-art sporting precincts in Victoria, which would be the ideal backdrop for hosting many different sports.

Conveniently, we’ll have some of the newest squash courts in Australia.

Not only that, but the sporting precinct’s oval and basketball courts could be perfect for hosting events like T20 cricket, rugby sevens, badminton, netball, 3×3 basketball, table tennis, judo, boxing and wrestling.

As part of the submission process, the State Government and Commonwealth Games Australia will look at legacy investment opportunities for regional communities.

With additional infrastructure, we’d be more than capable of hosting events like lawn bowls, hockey, diving, swimming, gymnastics, powerlifting, weightlifting and many more.

The “Mildura Marathon” has a nice ring to it too, just in case the Premier is reading.

It’s not a hard sell to have Mildura be part of the process.

We have great weather, abundant local accommodation, Victoria’s busiest regional airport, and we were just voted one of the most welcoming travel destinations in the state. A passenger train would be helpful too. Again, just in case the Premier is reading.

Dare to dream.
