Wentworth primed for another netball win

WENTWORTH is looking to keep their winning streak alive as the team takes on Merbein at George Gordon Oval on Saturday.

As the only undefeated A grade team, Wentworth is looking to come back strong after a Round 3 bye.

Coach Amanda Edwards said the team had been training hard during their week off in preparation for the match.

“We used our bye pretty well to work on a few things after Round 1 and 2 which I wanted to go over,” she said.

“(We are) looking forward to going into this week’s match with the things we have been working on.”

With a couple of new players joining the club this year, Edwards said she was delighted with how the team had come together.

“I’m really happy with how everyone has started,” she said.

“It is always difficult when you have new players coming in and out but it is a great opportunity for these girls and I’m very happy with the way they are working together.

“Molly Young has been a great contributor already, she is new to our club, so really happy with the way she has come in and is proving herself in the wing attack position.”

Edwards said she thought this weekend’s game against Merbein would be competitive.

“We try and aim to keep our score on the board and push out when we can but Merbein are a great defensive unit and they are great at attacking as well,” she said.

“We try and play our game as much as possible, but Merbein have been scoring really well also so (there are) things for us to be mindful of but excited to see how we go this weekend.”

Merbein have had a mixed start to the season, winning in Round 1 match against Robinvale Euston by 20 points, before losing against Mildura by four and Ouyen United by 19.

Coach Breigh Hammet said despite the losses, the team had been playing “quality competition” and were heading into this weekend’s game prepared.

“Wentworth are the benchmark this season so I think all teams prepare for those games knowing that,” she said.

“Other than a win we will be focused on providing opportunity for development and experience for our young talent to strengthen the future of our club.”

In today’s other games, Robinvale Euston host Red Cliffs at John James Oval, Ouyen United will take on Irymple at Underbool Oval, and Mildura meet Imperials at Brian Weightman Oval.

South Mildura has a bye.
