Mildura defender shines in new role

KATELYN Challis has found her feet in WD, using her skills to help Mildura secure last weekend’s win against Imperials.

This week’s Netballer of the Round said she had recently made a swap from goal defence to wing defence and had just started getting used to the position.

“I’ve usually been GD, but I’ve just swapped it up this year,” she said.

“It was hard at the start because I hadn’t played there for a while but I’m definitely finding my feet now and getting used to playing with our defence, which is good.”

After Mildura defeated Imperials by 17 points, Challis said she thought her new confidence playing WD may have been the reason she was selected as Netballer of the Round.

“Once I’ve played, it’s hard to remember,” she said.

“I’ve been finding my feet a bit more as WD so I probably got a few more touches. That probably helped.”

Challis said Imperials were strong in the Round 4 match, but Mildura were able to work together to get the lead.

“We weren’t up by a lot, it was close the whole way through., we just got a bit of a leap from them in the second half,” she said.

“We just knew they were a pretty tall team so we wanted to try and minimise our errors … just stick to what we know.”

Challis who started played netball at age 11, is now in her fifth year of A grade with the club.

“I wasn’t going to play this season,” she said.

“Every year I’ve been saying I’ll have a year off but that just hasn’t happened, so we will just see where we go.”

Challis said Mildura had been performing well this year and she was hoping the team would continue the momentum.

“This year we are tracking really well,” she said.

“We are definitely building each game and getting better and improving which is great to see, hopefully we will stick in the top four.”

Challis said she was really looking forward to taking on Red Cliffs next weekend,

“We have been doing really well these last couple of week so it will be good,” she said.

“Hopefully we get another win and we’d be 4-1 I think, which is a good start to the season.”

Mildura play Red Cliffs at Quandong Park at noon, Saturday.

As the Mildura Golf Resort Netballer of the Round, Katelyn received $100 from Sunraysia Daily and Mildura Golf Resort.
