ROUND 7’s senior game between Mildura and Robinvale Euston was a “tale of two halves”, says Mildura coach Illario Cavallo.
Playing at John James Oval on Saturday, Robinvale Euston and Mildura started off the game evenly before the Eagles were able to steam ahead and build a large margin.
Kicking 16 goals compared to Mildura’s four, Robinvale Euston won 109 to 31.
Cavallo said Mildura started well before losing their way and falling well behind Robinvale Euston.
“I thought it was a tale of two halves. First half, we had our game going, we were competitive, we were getting the run from behind and actually playing really well,” he said.
“Second half we pretty much stopped and they just got the better hand of us and pretty much ran away with it.”
Mildura had scored four goals and five points by half-time, with the scoreboard reading 29 to Robinvale Euston’s 51.
However, Mildura’s lack of competitiveness in the second half saw them only score a further two points by full time, increasing their score to 31.
Robinvale Euston coach Andrew Richardson said his team played some pretty solid footy for the majority of the day but excelled in the second half of the match.
“There was a slight breeze and we got it on our terms and I just think we probably had some more experienced players,” he said.
“They had a few unavailable and have a lot of kids playing, so to their credit they competed really well but it was probably just that lapse in the third quarter that let us take the game away.”
Cavallo said Mildura had only a couple more under 18s than usual and usually ran each game with a few players from the younger side.
Mildura was unable to field an under 18s game and was forced to forfeit.
President Nathan Seward said a lot of the under 18s side were unwell or unavailable.
Cavallo said a lot of the younger players from Mildura stood out during the match.
He said Brodie Jones and R.J. Watson played a really good game and leaders Daniel Carmichael, Joshua Dean and Dylan Murphy tried hard all day.
“I was really happy with the way they worked,” he said.
“It was a tough day at the office but you know you get those days and hopefully we can bounce back after the bye.”
Richardson said Robinvale Euston’s Ethan Gill, Justin Marriott and Daniel Batson all played very solid games and he hoped the team could continue to work on consistency in order to be ready for round 8’s game against Ouyen United.
“It is going to be a real challenge for us so we are just working on getting consistent for the four quarters,” he said.
“We are still having lapses in games so we will try and minimise them and obviously put a full game of footy together and we are going to have to try and get the four points.”
