UNDENIABLY an icon of the sporting world and up there as one of cricket’s most recognised umpires ever, the flamboyant Billy Bowden will be heading to northwest Victoria for this year’s Spirit of Cricket Festivale in Mildura.
Renowned for his theatrical signals and trademark “crooked finger of doom”, a familiar face of the game worldwide, Bowden will bring his distinctive style and profound experience to both halves of the two week event over September 16-30.
Bowden is set to umpire daily in the Over-50s Global Tri-Series followed by officiating two games per day for the T20 franchise aspect of the Festivale.
Boasting a highly decorated career, the veteran has umpired 84 Test matches, 200 ODI’s and 21 T20I’s of men’s cricket as well as 47 women’s international games in every format of the sport.
He is ranked third for the most matches officiated ever as an acknowledged ICC elite panel umpire, fourth across all forms and ninth for tests.
Among these incredible achievements Bowden has been a part of four ODI, two T20 World Cups and two Ashes series’.
The New-Zealander earned global admiration for his passion and unmistakable presence on the cricket pitch.
“I’m absolutely stoked to have such a world-renowned umpire like Billy Bowden attending the tournament,” said Spirit of Cricket Umpire director Jeff Charlesworth.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity not only for all appointed umpires to learn from his experience, but also for the players from each of the nations and franchises to be part of matches officiated by one of the greats.”
Managing director of the Spirit of Cricket Global Organisation, Anthony Telfer echoed that excitement.
“Billy’s appointment continues the upward trajectory of the Spirit of Cricket brand internationally,” Telfer said.
“With all matches being live streamed on Willow TV, this is a major win for our tournament’s exposure.
“We’re looking forward to developing a long-term and mutually beneficial relationship with Billy and welcoming him into the SoC family.”
The inclusion of Bowden follows a string of exciting announcements from Telfer and the Spirit of Cricket including the event being live streamed across North America through a partnership with Willow Sports as well as former Australian test batsman Mike Veletta playing for Western Australia’s Sandgropers in September.
Reflecting on his invitation, Bowden expressed both gratitude and anticipation.
“To be invited into the world of Over-50s Masters cricket is something I’m truly grateful for,” said Bowden.
