Gol Gol’s gun bats looking to fire as Twenty20 comp begins

MIDWEEK cricket returns to the Sunraysia Cricket Association this week with the first round of Club Twenty20 fixtures on Thursday night.

Five rounds of the twilight competition either side of the Christmas break leads into the final on February 23, 2023.

Undefeated so far in First Division, Gol Gol will host Nichols Point at Alcheringa Oval, Coomealla Wentworth collide with Irymple at George Gordon Oval, Mildura East are at home to Mildura West at Brian Weightman Oval, and Mildura Settlers face Merbein at Mildura Senior College.

Gol Gol coach Adam Thomson has immense firepower at the top of the batting order, with Shac Thomas, Aidan Calarco and Wade Hancock all capable of scoring quickly.

“It’s a bit interesting, but we’ll basically use it as an opportunity for our top order bats to get more time in the middle, which is always better than net batting I think, and hopefully that can help come later in the home and away season,” Thomson said.

“Shac always does well with the white ball cricket and he loves the shorter forms. If he, Aidan and Wade can spend a bit of time there and make a few runs it will be ideal.

“The boys are looking forward to getting a bit of extra batting in. We’ve got a home game too which is great, We had the first couple of one dayers at home and then we’ve been away since that point.

“It will mostly be made up of first and second division players. Being mid-week games some guys are more keen than others but it’s always good to have some extra cricket.”

In the last few interrupted season T20 games have mostly been played as part of the home and away season.
