Sunraysia District Tennis Association: round three results

ROUND three of Sunraysia District tennis saw teams returning to their local clubs, but in Division 2 only one side could make the most of its home court advantage

The interstate trip to play Wentworth Webels did Sacred Heart Starters no favours.

Webels continued their winning form from last week, dropping only the final mixed doubles of the day.

Wentworth’s “Baird Brothers” had a good day out, coming up winners in all the men’s doubles against fairly solid opposition.

Samar Warring and Grant Wright were stiff not to get the first set, when they went down in a tight tie-breaker to Peter and Nigel Baird.

Webels’ Kaitlin Hancock and Anne Snow were unbeaten on the day.

St Andrews Slammers were not perturbed by the grass as they took down Sarnia Sunbeams, 7 sets to 2, gaining themselves top spot on the ladder.

Tahni Oliver (nee Skewes) has been a welcome addition to the Saints. Returning home to Mildura after studying and working away for some years, she is going to prove difficult for most Div Two players to handle, with her heavy ball, consistency and fitness. Oliver’s score of 24/9 was matched by teammate Jen Gibson in a solid away win for Slammers.

Nichols Point Pointers hosted Alcheringa All Stars in the closest match in Div Two.

Both men and women split the sets from the first two doubles but Alchie picked up the third set in each case giving them a 4 sets to 2 lead with the mixed to play.

A win to Dale Chappell and Teoi Kirirua-Gill against Andrew Carlson and Leanne Hancock was not enough to change the result as All Stars picked up the remaining two mixed and the match, 6 sets, 62 games to Pointers 3 sets, 47 games.

All Stars’ David Walker (24/11) and Vhilla Evans (24/12) were the standout players on the day.
