Gol Gol netball: Nest gets bigger

GREATER depth and an influx of new players can give Gol Gol a more competitive edge for the 2023 Millewa Netball Association season.

A Grade coach Sarah Allan said the excitement was palpable at Alcheringa Oval, with all five divisions boasting stronger line-ups.

Abbey Lovell and Chelsea Henderson will be a boost for the top division as they add greater flexibility and provide leadership for the playing group.

Allan said Lovell had the skill set to play in attack or defence, while Henderson was pegged as a shooter but also had the ability to play in midcourt.

“It’s looking really promising so far,” Allan said.

“We’ve had an influx of new players into the club across all grades and we’ve managed to put together three full teams, which is great.

“It brings new energy after the last few years, especially with those of us who have been around the club for a longer time.

“Junior teams have got great numbers this year and we’ve been able to retain a lot of last year’s group as well.

“We have a bit of depth this time, which is great as it’s something we’ve struggled with over the past two or three years.”

Allan, who herself will miss the first half of the season recovering from an off-season broken ankle, said the movement of players across all Millewa clubs bode well for an exciting campaign.

“It’s always hard to say where you sit coming into the season but I have the strong belief we’ll be a lot more competitive this year,” she said.

“We’re looking forward to getting on the court and seeing where we stand.

“Friday night netball, which we get twice early in the season, is always a great atmosphere and something we enjoy.

“With the first game this year we’re expecting quite a few people with Dane Swan playing footy, so hopefully there will be a good crowd there for that.”

Gol Gol face reigning premiers Bambill in round 1 on April 21.
