Strong line-ups across five divisions

COACH: Sarah Allan.

ARRIVALS: Abby Lovell, Chelsea Henderson.

DEPARTURES: Bianca Douglas.

GREATER depth and an influx of new players can give Gol Gol a greater competitive edge for the 2023 Millewa Netball Association season.

A Grade coach Sarah Allan said the excitement is palpable at Alcheringa Oval for the girls in brown and gold, with all five divisions boasting stronger line-ups.

The additions of Abbey Lovell and Chelsea Henderson will be a boost for the top division as they add greater flexibility and provide leadership for the playing group.

Allan said Lovell has the skill set to play in attack or defence, while Henderson has been pegged as a shooter but also has the ability to play in mid-court.

“It’s looking really promising so far,” Allan said.

“We’ve had an influx of new players into the club across all grades and we’ve managed to put together three full teams which is great.

“It brings new energy after the last few years, especially with those of us who have been around the club for a longer time.

“We have a bit of depth this time which is great as it’s something we’ve struggled with over the past two or three years.”

From last year’s side Katrina Sobkowiak won’t take to the court but remains heavily involved as the club’s netball coordinator, while Allan herself is likely to miss at least the first half of the season as she recovers from a broken ankle suffered during the off-season.

“It’s always hard to say where you sit coming into the season but I have the strong belief we’ll be a lot more competitive this year,” she said.

“We’re looking forward to getting on the court and seeing where we stand.

“Friday night netball, which we get twice early in the season, is always a great atmosphere and something we enjoy.”

Gol Gol face reigning premiers Bambill in Round 1 on April 21.
