Three Colours off to a bright start

THREE Colours sit at the top of the pecking order after the opening day of the Football Federation Sunraysia Rudi Horvat Round Robin Cup.

Three rounds of Senior Men’s action took place Sunday with another two to follow this weekend.

While Colours have a bye in one of those two contests, their two wins and a loss on day one puts them in good position.

An opening 3-2 victory against reigning champions Mildura City and a 1-0 win over Irymple Knights was the ideal start for coach Peter Di Giorgi and his squad.

Their only loss came in their third consecutive match of the day, going down to Mildura United 2-0.

United were were the only team not to taste defeat on day one, drawing one-all with Nichols Point in their opening clash before a bye and the Colours victory.

Di Giorgi said he was happy with how his side performed, but said there was still work to be done before the start of the home and away season on April 30.

“We were pretty happy, the boys played well,” he said.

“City and Knights were two teams we weren’t able to beat last year so we hope it’s a step in the right direction.

“In the last game a lot of our better players came off because we played three straight games, but United are also a pretty good and definitely deserved to win that one.”

Di Giorgi said the Cup was a good chance to “iron out a few things” ahead of the season proper.

“We’ve had a number of younger players come through and we’re lucky to have a few internationals playing this year so there’s still a bit of work for us to do,” he said.

The solitary scheduled Senior Women’s clash between Nichols Point and Mildura City was forfeited by the Citizens, giving last year’s grand final winners an automatic 3-0 win.
