Settled Roos set to build

COACH: Maddy McPhee

ARRIVALS: Nil.

DEPARTURES: Nil.

MERINGUR have consistency on their side this year as they head into the season with the same team they finished last year with.

Coach Maddy McPhee, who is in her second year leading the Roos, said Meringur struggled to maintain players at the start of last year’s season.

However, near the end of the home and away rounds, a strong team had formed and it showed on the court.

She said she was excited to see the group continue into the new season.

“We don’t have anyone in or out, we have kept the same core group as last year which is really good,” she said.

“It was definitely a big turnover last year, not having everybody and being short staffed at the start, so getting people in each week was hard.

“It is nice that we have this core group that we can build on.”

McPhee said with no player changes, the team would be able to continue to build on the work begun last year.

“For a lot of the girls it was their first year in A Grade so it was a big learning experience for them,” she said.

“But because we have all stayed together we can build on that and our camaraderie.”

Last year, Meringur finished the home and away season in fifth place, just shy of finals.

McPhee said making the top four was the goal of this season.

“We know from last year that the team that went through undefeated came out in straight sets, anything can happen in finals,” she said.

“So that’s the goal, just getting in there and then seeing what can happen.”

Meringur faces Werrimull in Round One at the Lake.
