Gibbs and Brown visit Mildura

FORMER AFL players Campbell Brown and Bryce Gibbs substituted the oval-shaped ball for a smaller, heavier one recently when they enjoyed some lawn bowls with locals at the Mildura Worker’s Bowls Club.

While it was a casual affair, Mildura Regional Development CEO Brett Millington said that one of the athletes showed promise at the sport while the other did not.

“It was quite surprising, Campbell (Brown) struggled a bit but Bryce (Gibbs) was actually quite a good bowler,” he said.

The retired duo were in town to be a part of “Mildura Week”, an annual event that Mildura Regional Development has used to promote tourism in the area.

First stop for the pair was at the Mildura Worker’s Bowls club where they enjoyed some lawn bowls with the locals.

After the bowls had concluded both of the guys took some time to take photos and answer questions with those in attendance.

The next few days saw both Brown and Gibbs visit many other local businesses.

The visit also shone light on a niche sport that Mr Brown had been a part of on the international stage, Kabaddi, a popular team wrestling sport in India and Asia.

“We went to the Kabaddi cup (local) on Saturday morning … which was really ironic given that Campbell is the reigning captain of the Australian side,” Mr Millington said.

Mr Millington hailed the week as a success.

“It’s something that we do with the SEN radio network so there was live crosses to South and Australia and Melbourne and really what its about is promoting Mildura as a destination to visit,” he said.

“Both of them are on air on SEN … but also both of them have large social media followings.

“It really works well for us in terms of general promotion.”
