WENTWORTH maintained their unbeaten run with a hard-fought 60 to 49 win over a determined Robinvale Euston on the main court at Dareton’s George Gordon Oval in SFNL A Grade action on Saturday.
Despite the 11-goal margin, the contest was fiercely competitive across all four quarters.
The Eagles, fresh off back-to-back wins, came out firing in the opening term, unsettling the Roos with speed and intensity.
Goal shooter Amanda Edwards responded with a commanding 13-goal quarter to give Wentworth a slender five-goal edge at the first break.
Wentworth’s defensive reshuffle in the second – featuring Natalie Vercher at goal defence and Courtney Healy in wing defence – helped contain the Eagles’ attack.
With Lola McInerney solid under the post and Vercher’s pressure, the Roos stretched their lead to 13 by half-time.
Robinvale Euston found their rhythm in the third, led by a standout performance from Jorja Delcastenge in the defensive circle.
Her relentless pressure, combined with the tireless efforts of Kirsten Neyland through the midcourt, saw the Eagles claw back the margin.
Sarah Hepburn and Georgia Giofrelle capitalised on the hard work, with the visitors closing the gap to 16 at three-quarter time.
A spirited final term from Robinvale saw Hepburn fire home 11 goals, applying late pressure to the home side.
But the Roos’ shooting duo of Edwards, who finished with 39 goals, and Elizabeth Rowe on 20, held firm under intense defensive scrutiny from Delcastenge and Gabby Marrone.
Wentworth’s best were Molly Mangan and Natalie Vercher, while Robinvale Euston were well served by Neyland and Hepburn.
Despite the loss, the Eagles earned respect with their grit and proved they can match it with the competition’s benchmark.
Wentworth now turn their focus to a tough clash with Merbein next week.
