Swallows ride a wave

DESPITE their youth, Irymple’s A Grade netball team continue to exceed expectations, comfortably disposing of Imperials 41-28 at Henshilwood Reserve on Saturday.

Swallows coach Sherrie Geister said the performance was really encouraging to see.

“We’re just riding the wave, I think our oldest player is 21,” she said.

“Really young team so without an older head out there, they’re doing a great job.”

Geister gave a lot of credit to the versatility and leadership of Mackenzie Ryan.

“Defensively we are always very good … Mackenzie Ryan, who started in defence and ended up in attack and then went back to defence, she was outstanding,” she said.

Last week’s netballer of the round, Indi Spratt, was also a standout in the forward half for the Swallows with a number of crafty passes that set up shots.

“Most of our passages of play were quite good,” Geister said.

“We’ve been working on a lot of strategies and they seemed to pay off.

“We did have some bad passages of play, though, and I feel like it wasn’t so much the pressure of Imperials but rather our decision-making.

On the other side of the court, Imperials’ slow start, with just four goals scored in the first quarter, kept them behind the eight-ball.
