Lions prevail at last

CARDROSS opened their account for the 2023 Millewa Netball Association A Grade season with a last-gasp win over Gol Gol.

The Lions had been clawing away across the opening six rounds of the season without breaking the drought, but Saturday saw them finally get over the line for a 45-44 win against the Hawks at Carramar Drive.

The victory moves Cardross from the bottom of the table, leapfrogging Meringur on percentage.

Shooter Montanna Ezzey was on fire, and well supported by Charlotte McKendrick and Chloe Brabender, guiding them to the important result.

For Gol Gol, Abbey Lovell, Jessemy Thornton and Abbey Curran all performed well in the defeat.

Third-placed Werrimull also scored a huge victory by taking down the previously unbeaten Nangiloc 48-42.

Coach and reigning A Grade best and fairest winner Anna Marshall was instrumental in orchestrating the victory, with Cassie Morris and and Brooke Watson also playing important roles in the victory.

Tamara and Ashlee Loveridge and Gabrielle Gardner were all impressive for the Demons, but the side have been left to lick their wounds as they prepare to face Gol Gol after the break.

Bambill remain in second place on the table, following a strong 61-21 win over Meringur at Lake Cullulleraine.

Coach Samantha Garraway, Tessa Houkamau and Georgia Bower all put in big performances for the Saints, while Teagan Pettigrew, Madelyn McPhee and Lakayla Pettit were named in the best for the Roos.

Millewa Netball Association heads into a break over the King’s Birthday long weekend, before returning on June 17 with Cardross at home to Meringur, Nangiloc facing Gol Gol and Werrimull hosting Bambill.
