Kangas lift for first win

OUYEN United’s first win of the season was a “big relief”, says centre player Ellen Morrish, who believes the Kangas have quite a few “winnable” games coming up.

Despite making it to last year’s grand final and only losing by one goal, the Kangas began this season 0-4, with one draw against Imperials.

Morrish, who was selected as this week’s Netballer of the Round, said Saturday’s win against Robinvale Euston was needed after the disappointing draw and start to the season.

“We were really happy and relieved to get that win,” she said.

“It was a bit disappointing to not get the four points against South the previous week, we were a bit disappointed in the result and ourselves during that game.

“We probably didn’t carry ourselves like we usually do, we got a bit frustrated by things we couldn’t control and instead of just adjusting, we sort of got sucked in.”

Morrish said coming into the season with four straight losses after narrowly losing the grand final was a “bit of a sore spot” for the team.

“We just couldn’t believe we got there last year,” she said.

“So while it does hurt, it has given a few of us that extra drive to keep playing and trying to get there again.”

Ouyen United play Red Cliffs and Imps in the next two rounds and Morrish said they were “crucial games” for the Kangas.

“They will be some tough games, but I think they are definitely winnable,” she said.

“We just need to make sure we are treasuring the ball and doing the little things right, getting our fundamentals right, that is what will help us get over the line.”

Morrish said it felt like the team was building momentum.

“We are still figuring out some combinations we have lots of depth and versatility but hopefully we can settle the team within the next few weeks so we can get some consistency,” she said.

“But in saying that, we are really focusing on some of our juniors this year so we are looking for any opportunity to sort of get them on court.”
