Sisters’ dual milestone a rare feat

SOUTH Mildura sisters Maddison and Courtney Hahn will each reach a significant milestone when they step on to the netball court this weekend.

Both are playing their 200th netball games on the same day, but in separate grades for the Bulldogs at Mildura Sporting Precinct.

It is not the first time Maddison and Courtney, daughters of ex-South Mildura club president and premiership player Peter Hahn, have reached a milestone together, both playing their 150th games on the same day in 2018.

“We hadn’t really kept track,” Courtney said.

“It is weird how it ended up like that.”

Maddison, a C Res player, and Courtney, a B Grader, were surprised to have achieved another milestone together again.

“I think someone said last year that Courtney was a couple of games ahead which is why she continued to play this season to get to the 200,” Maddison said.

“I didn’t know how many I had.”

Calling the South Mildura Football Netball Club home for most of their netballing life, the sisters have won premierships together and played in several different grades.

They said their dad had been the reason they played the sport, starting off at Bambill when he was playing there.

But the family returned to Mildura South when he retired.

Courtney said they enjoyed the atmosphere at the club and how it was family-orientated.

Club president Kevin Burke is even the pair’s uncle, keeping their connection to the club close.

“Now we are at the older end of the netballers, we are always pretty close to the netballers, we get along with everyone whether they are A grade or lower grades,” she said.

“It is just what we know, everyone who is around the club have watched us grow up.”

The girls agreed that they didn’t play netball to be the best in the league, but to just have fun.

“It is just the community and the friendships that you get from netball,” Courtney said.

“Just the social side of it really that is why I play.”

Maddison, 30, and Courtney, 29, will hit the court on Saturday, facing Robinvale Euston for the first time this season.

Both hoped they get a win for their 200th game, but Courtney knew it would be a tough fight for her B Grade team.

“They are just above us on the ladder,” she said.

“Their B grade was in the grand final last year, they’re very strong contenders, so I’m assuming they will be the same this season.”

Courtney’s game will be played at 1.30pm at MSP, followed by Maddison’s at 2.30pm.
