Winter safety alert for water users

AS school holidays approach, Goulburn-Murray Water is reminding visitors to its lakes, dams and reservoirs to make safety a priority.

GMW highlighted safety messages including observing water levels, seeking out local knowledge on conditions and hazards, maintaining a good lookout and ensuring that any boat’s motor kill switch is attached to the driver.

Boat users should take note of signage at boat ramps, ensure vessels are equipped with the required safety equipment and avoid alcohol and overloading the vessel.

GMW Water Storage Services general manager Martina Cusack said the colder weather could pose certain risks that visitors should be aware of.

“During winter, there are often fewer boats on our storages and waterways,” she said.

“This means it is crucial that people have a means of communication if their boat breaks down or has a problem. If they are going somewhere without reception, they should inform someone before they leave of where they are heading and when they plan to return.”

“Wearing a life jacket is also particularly crucial during the winter, as the cold water can drastically reduce the risk of survival for people who fall in.”

Ms Cusack said “taking these simple steps could greatly improve safety “.

“We want everyone who visits our storages to have fun but, most importantly, we want them to stay safe,” she said.

Visitors are encouraged to read recreation guides on GMW’s website to find out which activities are permitted.
