Werrimull work for win

GOL Gol’s A Grade side put on a strong fight to slow their fiery opponents, but it wasn’t enough for them to beat the third-placed Werrimull.

The Hawks stepped on the court strong, ready to take on the Magpies, currently the only team to have defeated top-of-the-ladder Nangiloc.

Golly had a three-goal lead at the end of the first quarter but the Pies remained calm under pressure and fired back to get in front before half-time.

The Pies finished with a five-goal lead, defeating the Hawks 47-42.

Werrimull playing coach Anna Thomson said it was “definitely a tough game”.

“Golly came out fighting and definitely made us work for the win, but we did fight really hard so it was nice to come back,” she said.

“Our defenders absolutely smashed it, they continued to fight and fight until the very end, they got touches on absolutely everything and the midcourt got plenty of intercepts, which really changed the game for us.”

Gol Gol coach Sarah Allen said it was “fairly well matched” on the court.

“Our defensive pressure all the way down the court was impressive this week and resulted in a number of turnovers,” she said.

“Werrimull also excelled in this area though and so our centre-court players had to really work hard to find space.”

The Hawks had their full team back on the court this week.

“We were fortunate to have Ava Allen in the mix this week, allowing us some height at both ends of the court,” Sarah Allen said.

“Ava Allen and Chelsea Henderson combined beautifully in goals to keep us scoring well.

“At the other end of the court Abbey Lovell and Amy Hunt worked equally well to ensure goal-scoring opportunities were made difficult for the Werrimull girls.”

Werrimull’s best were Cassie Morris, Tara Martin and Aislinn Campbell.

Golly’s best were Allen, Henderson and Hunt.

At Mildura Senior College, Bambill defeated Cardross 43-41.

At Lake Cullulleraine, Nangiloc downed Meringur 44-25.
