Big day for single-minded juniors

JUNIOR tennis players were up and about early last Saturday for the Sunraysia District Tennis Association Junior Singles Championships at the Aero courts.

Players participated in a graded round-robin competition.

A Grade was taken out by Derek Bagacay, from Sacred Heart. Derek has been having a stellar season, including some great results in senior tennis.

Runner-up Will Schreiber from Red Cliffs put the pressure on Bagacay, who managed to hold on for a 6-4 win.

The numerous entrants in B1 allowed for two sections in both the girls and boys’ competitions.

Boys’ Section A winner was Avaneeth Jeyakanthan by one game from Nate Hogarth.

In Section B, Ellis Williams just nudged out Pranav Chowdry 18-16.

The B1 Boys final between Jeyakanthan and Williams was one-sided on the scoresheet but highly entertaining.

B1 Girls Section A saw another win to the Jeyakanthan family. Aathana Jeyakanthan was the winner over Tami Fanoiki 16-12.

In Section B, Nicola DeMaria continued her steady play to amass 18 games to surpass Aveena Jeyakanthan’s 14.

The final between Nicola and Aathana went right down to the wire. DeMaria got the win in a 7-5 tie-break.

In B2 Nate Lawn conquered all before him with a total of 24 games. The final set was a battle for second place between Tomi Fanoiki and Isacc Keens. Keen’s heavy topspin play confused Fanoiki at the beginning but her consistency ruled with a 6-3 win to put her in the runner-up position.

Louis Nakhla won the C Grade singles with a perfect score of 24. Runner-up was Kaitlyn Bennett on 20 games.

District play will next be held on Saturday, July 8 with both senior and junior doubles championships.

Please get your entries in to club delegates by Thursday, July 6.
