Full house at Nichols Point

THREE home matches saw all available courts in use at Nichols Point Tennis Club last Saturday.

The magnificent weather helped to provide some excellent tennis and some tight results.

The closest match was a Division 1 tie between Nichols Pont Guns and Roses and Sacred Heart Guns.

The shootout saw Sacred Heart victorious but the margin was slim.

In a battle of the young guns that lasted well into the afternoon, Nichols Point’s Jack Burford won 8-7 over Anthony De Maria while Renee Affleck proved too good for Emmie Dowling to equal the ledger.

Jack Wilson and Evan Newell for Sacred Heart prevailed in a tie-breaker over Ryan Samaris and Jack Madafferi.

Nichols Point won the remaining two men’s doubles.

The women’s doubles all went the way of the ever-consistent Sacred Heart women.

With the score at 5 sets to 3, the all-important mixed doubles were split.

Ryan Samaris and Cheyenne Riordan won 8-3 over Jack Wilson and Brianna Bagnall and super-steady Leanne Jordan and Evan Newell added to Sacred Heart’s total with an 8-1 win over Jack Madafferi and Michelle Riordan, giving Sacred Heart a win by 6 sets to 4.

A second Division 1 match between Nichols Point Legends and Sarnia Sloggers did not have the same close final score but included five tie-break sets.

Joel Hamilton played against Cambell McKenzie in three of them.

Super-veteran Brenda Hornsby had a tough tussle against Jess Tiller with their three sets also all decided by tie-breakers.

Nathan Swaeney, Aaron Wilkie and Cathryn Dawes all finished with 24 games for the Legends in an 8 sets to 2 win.

The third match was Nichols Point Stayers versus Alcheringa Almighties.

With tie-breakers aplenty in both the men’s and women’s doubles, sets were equal as they headed into the mixed.

Max Cornwell and Leanne Hancock put the Almighties ahead with a strong win over youngster Noah Turnball and his experienced partner Stacey Leaver.

The formidable Pointers duo of Marty Smith and Wendy Dickie proved far too consistent for Ash Quinlivan and Peta-Mary Hogarth to equalise.

At four sets all, debutant seniors’ player Cooper Young took to the court with Sandra Slatter.

Their 8-2 win over Mark Henderson and Louise Olofsson gave the match to Nichols Point, 5 sets to 4.
