Demons grab top place

NANGILOC secured the Millewa Netball Association A Grade minor premiership following a hard-fought victory over Bambill at Mildura Senior College.

Top spot was on the line between the two sides who will face off again this Saturday in their qualifying final, but ultimately the Demons earned top place with a 39-33 result.

While they play off for an immediate avenue to the grand final on September 2, Werrimull and Gol Gol will collide on Sunday in an elimination final.

Nangiloc’s victory over Bambill gives them a 2-1 record against the Saints, however, the margin in all three games has never been greater than seven goals.

The Dees won the first contest 42-35 in round 6, but the Saints reversed the result in round 10, 43-37.

Shooter Chloe Nelson, Kristy Middleton and Tamara Loveridge all starred for the victors, while Samantha Garraway, Ebony Roberts, Tessa Houkamau were best for Bambill.

Gol Gol celebrated club and league legend Katrina Sobkowiak’s 200th game in style, with the Hawks taking a 47-37 win over Meringur at Alcheringa Oval.

Ladder positions weren’t in any doubt, but a victory for the home side should give them confidence going into the do-or-die final with Werrimull.

Previous history is against the Hawks, however, with the Magpies having won all three head-to-head contests in 2023, the closest game being a five-goal margin in round 9.

Sobkowiak was a standout in her milestone game alongside Chelsea Henderson and Abbey Lovell, while Teagan Pettigrew, Lakayla Pettit and Meg Hammond were best for the Roos.

Werrimull were given an automatic victory as Cardross had to forfeit their final game of the season.
