Last round key to soccer finals

THE S-League titles have been run and won, but there is still plenty to play for in the final round of the home and away season.

With the finals series and another trophy still to come, ladder positions will be vital for the first week of finals, beginning next Sunday.

It makes this weekend’s final round contest between Nichols Point and Three Colours vital for semi-final qualification for either side.

With the top three of Mildura City, Irymple Knights and Mildura United already locked in, only one of the Pointers and Colours, who occupy fourth and fifth place, will make it through to next week.

A win for either team will give them the required buffer, however a stalemate would see Colours advance due to superior goal difference.

It does mean the toughest of match-ups awaits, going head-to-head with City in their elimination contest.

Colours won a close contest 3-2 in their last meeting, with David Chick and Brandon Zaffina finding the back of the net alongside an own goal from the Pointers’ defence.

In the other match-up, following their 2-0 loss to incumbent champions Mildura City on Sunday, Irymple Knights will look to rebound against Mildura United in a prelude to next week’s semi-final contest.

In senior women’s, Irymple Knights and Nichols Point will collide ahead of their return semi-final next week, with the winner going on to face champions Mildura City in the decider on September 10.
