Defender key to heartening win

IRYMPLE young gun defender Jorja Delcastegne says it was good to finish the season on a high, despite her team not making the top four.

Irymple defeated Merbein during Saturday’s round to steal fifth on the ladder, falling just short of the top four.

Delcastegne, this week’s Netballer of the Round, was listed as her team’s best, alongside midcourter Sophie Price.

She said it was great that everything had fallen together well for the team’s final game.

“It was different to the week before as we had a few changes to positions due to injury, but it worked,” she said.

“I feel we played a really good team game.”

The 18-year-old, who has played netball for about five years, joined the Swallows’ A Grade squad last year.

She said she had begun training with the team before being “lucky enough” to play with them.

Delcastegne has been one of a number of talented young players in the Swallows’ ranks, with the team’s oldest player this year only 21.

She said she was enjoying the team dynamic and being able to develop and gain experience together as a team.

“I love playing defence, especially with who I play with down my half of the court,” she said.

“But it has been good to change up and play with a younger defender like Lily (Droffelaar), but I also love playing in the ring with Macca (Mackenzie Ryan) as well.”

Delcastegne’s sister Shakara also plays for the A Grade squad.

“It is great (to play with Shak),” she said.

“Sometimes it easy to get frustrated at her, but we both love it.”

Delcastegne hoped she would be able to continue as a part of the squad next year and was thankful for all the volunteers and supporters that helped to make sure the girls could take the court every week.
