Swallows top best and fairest awards

IT was Irymple’s night on Wednesday as Swallows netballers took out six of the nine SFNL best and fairest awards for this season.

With the A Grade Horkings Medal being counted on Monday alongside the senior McLeod Medal, the other netball grades saw their individual league leaders named during the week.

Irymple’s Tarlia Couzner finished on top of the B Grade Walder/Hyder Medal with 26 votes, just two ahead of Ouyen United’s Katherene Carusella, with Leah Baynes (Irymple) and Abby Rowe (Wentworth) next on 17.

Irymple’s Jo Haynes became a multiple-time winner of the C Grade Hickey Medal with 30 votes, ahead of teammate Brooke Shelly on 25 and Mildura’s Grace Morganti on 23.

Brooke Hammond of the Swallows grabbed the C Reserve Collihole Medal with 23 votes in a tight count, with Merbein’s Prue Taylor scoring 22 and Red Cliffs’ Allegra Bottrell-Thorburn 20.

Irymple’s Lily Droffelaar, who played much of the season in A Grade as well, took out the 17 and under Division 1 Wilson Medal with 29 votes. Imperials’ Ebony Ietto (26) and Mildura’s Molly McDonald (23) rounded out the podium.

It was a Mildura Morello one-two in the 17 and under Div 2 Mentiplay Medal, Ashleigh coming home to win on 27 votes from Kate on 24, Romy Wescombe of Wentworth third on 20.

Evie Oldham of Irymple took out another close count to win the 15 and under Div 1 Healy Medal with 28 votes.

Wentworth’s Alice Siale was second with 25, followed by Allira Hope (South Mildura), Elke Meehan (Mildura) and Sapphire Dodds (Merbein) all on 22.

The 15 and under Div 2 Macdonald Medal went to South Mildura’s Olivia Marshall, whose 31 votes saw her a clear winner ahead of Mildura’s Eadie Cardew (22), and Eden Trinick (Merbein) and Mollie O’Callaghan (Mildura) on 19.

Robinvale Euston’s Ellen Heeps went home with the 13 and under Div 1 Mayne Medal with 26 votes, ahead of South Mildura duo Milly Menhennett (21) and Macey Andriske (19) and Merbein’s Isla French (19).

Irymple topped and tailed the night with Alexis Paterson winning the 13 and under Div 2 Byrne Medal in the closest count of the night.

She received 21 votes ahead of a trio of players on 20 that included Cleo Smith (Red Cliffs), Laisa Sovau (South Mildura) and Olivia Alvey (Mildura).
