Fascinating contest looms

FINAL round fortunes could see the Murray Darling Golf Association Pennant finals qualification go down to the wire.

Round 5 of the competition at Riverside on Sunday will decide which two teams in each grade will make it through to next week’s final at Robinvale Golf Club.

In men’s Division 1, it’s a battle between Red Cliffs and Mildura to see who faces defending champions Coomealla.

Red Cliffs have the advantage after last week’s win over Mildura, but face the undefeated Coomealla this week. A win or even a halved contest would be enough to set up a re-match next week, but a loss would put their fate in Mildura’s hands.

A Riverside win or a half would rule out Mildura’s chances, but a win for them could see them shuffle up to second place with only a small discrepancy in games won.

It sets up a fascinating contest on Sunday.

Ladies Division 1 already has its finalists sorted as Coomealla and Mildura will go head-to-head.

They will prepare themselves as well as possible against Red Cliffs and Riverside respectively.

A race in three for the finals positions is also underway in men’s Division 2 as Robinvale, Riverside and Coomealla all head into the final round with three points.

Red Cliffs are one point behind but would need plenty to go their way to make it through, including a win over ladder leaders Robinvale.

Riverside and Coomealla will also face each other, while bottom two sides Merbein and Mildura collide in the other clash.

Since the merging of the two pools in division 3, Riverside and Red Cliffs 2 have made their way to the top of the table.

While the former is almost guaranteed a place in the final, the latter still has to see off a challenge from Mildura Gold.

Red Cliffs 2 will face Coomealla, Mildura Gold tackle Robinvale, Riverside face Ouyen and Red Cliffs 1 collide with Mildura Black.

Tee off at Riverside on Sunday is from 8am.
