Bullants add depth

MILLEWA captain Scottie Clark says the Red Cliffs Cricket Association this season could be one of the closest in recent history.

After four rounds, a clear leader in the five-team A Grade competition is yet to be established, which could make for an intriguing campaign.

The Bullants secured their first win of the season last week with an impressive seven-wicket victory over grand finalists Tempy Tigers, and Clark believes it could be the start of a good run for the club.

“We were really chuffed, actually,” Clark said.

“We struggled for a numbers a bit in the first few weeks with some players away and injured but we’re starting to get the team together now which is great.

“We’ve got a few guys coming in, and we’ll actually have an English import, Jacob Batten, for the first time in a few weeks, which will be great.

“One of our boys played some cricket in the UK and they became really good mates, so he was keen to come over and spend time in Australia and just play some more social cricket, but he’s also got a bit of ability, too, which is great.”

The addition of former Cardross all-rounder Jeremy Aworth has also added to the depth of the squad.

“Jez is someone I’ve always enjoyed playing against and got along with really well and after a bit of a chat he decided he wanted to do a season at Millewa, which we’re happy about,” Clark said.

“He’s a talented all-rounder that adds a lot to the squad.”

Clark said the competition appears to be coming closer together the start the season.

“I think after this week everyone has played each other once and there is no team way out in front, so the field has really drawn closer together,” he said.

“Anyone is capable of getting the four points over each other and it makes for an exciting competition.

“I think we’ve got a really good chance and hopefully once we get towards Christmas, we might have pushed our way a bit higher on the table.”

On Saturday, Millewa are at home to defending premiers Ouyen Rams while Robinvale Euston host Tempy.
