Rangers regroup with fresh talent

AFTER the loss of multiple players ahead of the Red Cliffs Cricket Association season, Robinvale Euston president Tom Lister was wondering how his team’s numbers would stack up.

He needn’t have worried. With players returning to the area and others picking up the bat after being involved in an off-field capacity, the Rangers have been ready to roll.

After five rounds and 19 players used, the Rangers are second on the A Grade table with a 2-2 record, equal with Nursery Ridge and Tempy.

They travel to Blackburn Park this weekend to face reigning premiers and ladder leaders Ouyen Rams.

“To be 2-2, we can’t really complain too much,” Lister said.

“We probably could have done better with the ball last week (in their five-wicket loss to Tempy) but we’re building as we go.

“We’ll take it the same as every other week, we don’t change how we approach each game too much.

“We’re changing players over every week at the moment but hopefully after Christmas, we’ll have a pretty settled line-up.

“Just guys being away for work, and a few of the footy boys taking extra time off after a later footy season.”

Lister said the fact the club has used so many players is a great sign of the available depth.

“We lost five players in the off-season and we thought we might have a bit of trouble trying to get those numbers back but we’ve actually been able to get a few through the door this year,” he said.

“We’ve had a couple of blokes who had been involved in the club decide to play, which has helped.

“We’ve had some guys return, some move to the area and others just take up cricket again. Then with Cardross not able to field a team, we were able to get Seth Langian across which has been a real boost.

“It’s been pretty fun this year, our new captain Aaron Zappia is pretty relaxed and it’s been an enjoyable atmosphere so far.”
