Recruiting coup boosts Swallows

IRYMPLE is anticipating a more mature netball squad for the upcoming season, highlighted by the addition of a dependable duo switching codes.

Mildura basketball stalwarts Vanessa Power and Bronte Pezzaniti will wear blue and yellow next season after many years of service with the Heat.

While they will need to familiarise themselves with a different game, coach Sherrie Geister believed they could make the step and complement the Swallows squad, who were youthfully gallant last season, narrowly missing out on finals by half a game.

Geister commended the effort of last year’s team, but hoped to see growth moving forward.

“The kids last year did a great job, but we just lacked a bit of maturity, which everyone spoke about last season,” Geister said.

“So, I’m hoping the addition of some people in their thirties will just add that little bit of experience and depth to the A grade team.”

Geister said the club had tried to gain Pezzaniti’s signature for years, given her husband Nick has been at Henshilwood Oval for well over a decade, but to welcome Power at the same time was an added bonus.

“Very excited to have them both on board,” she said.

“Obviously, there’s a lot of talk about both of them because of their careers in basketball.

“They definitely both have the hand-eye coordination and all the assets that go with it.

“It’s just gaining that knowledge of netball, being a different game that’s structured differently and has different tactics.

“Keen to get to work with them, it’s very exciting.”
