Dominant Rams aim for rare feat

OUYEN Rams’ dominance of the Red Cliffs Cricket Association in recent years has already proved fruitful, but the lure of the rare three-peat could top it all off.

The two-time defending champions have won 41 matches and lost just four times since the start of the 2021/22 season, including once this campaign.

All signs point towards a third straight A Grade premiership this weekend against near rivals Tempy Tigers, but it’s not a situation the powerhouse unit will take for granted.

“It’s always good to play the boys from down the road, they’re a good side and it should make for another good grand final,” Rams captain Alex Morrish said.

“We’ll be disappointed if we don’t win but we also know Tempy are a good side and we won’t underestimate what they can bring to the table.”

The Rams are not short on performers across the board, with the relatively settled squad boasting three batters in the top 10 run scorers for the season, plus three bowlers in the top 11 wicket takers.

The one player who features in both is all-rounder Daniel Pryse, who has made 249 runs at an average of 35.5, as well as taking 16 wickets.

Opener Conor Schultz (250 runs) and big hitter Brad Parsons (221) have also had strong seasons with the bat, while Daniel Kay is the competition’s equal-leading wicket taker with 27 and Morrish himself has 17 scalps.

The captain, who took 4/8 in last year’s premiership victory, said the side’s depth is a real weapon.

“It’s a pretty settled side and will be pretty similar to last year’s premiership team, I think there’s only one change from that line-up and I think having that consistency been really helpful in contributing to our success,” Morrish said.

“I think if either Conor Schultz at the top or Daniel Pryse at three can get going with the stick, it will go a long way to us getting the win.

“With the ball, there’s plenty of options and a number of blokes who can step up and take wickets when needed.

“It has helped as captain to have so many blokes to call on, but at the same time, it’s also been tough to give everyone a bowl to get them in form for finals.”
