Baker blitz wins junior golf title

ROBINVALE golf prodigy Stephanie Baker has shown the boys how it’s done, claiming the inaugural Sunraysia Junior Golf Week title.

The 16-year-old was well ahead of the pack in the four-day junior golf event, winning by 30 strokes from Cameron Smith.

In rounds at Riverside, Merbein, Coomealla and Red Cliffs golf clubs, Baker shot rounds of 77, 75, 72 and 76 to finish with 300 off the stick to take the scratch total.

Smith was the next best, with 330 followed by Mildura clubmate Josh Furey on 349.

Baker, who won the Victorian Junior Country Championships and Coomealla Open last year, also claimed the Division 1 nett victory with 292, playing off a handicap of 1.4, finishing ahead of Lachlan Smith on 294.

Samuel Longeri took out the Division 2 nett title with 295 from Isaiah Faulkhead on 300.

While Baker, who has aspirations of playing collegiate golf in the US, was at the front of the pack, the four-day event also gave the opportunity for other teenage golfers to play in their first tournament, and for some an experience outside of their usual course.

Event organiser Garth Doherty of Drummond Golf Sunraysia Golf Range said the young players enjoyed their week and the weather gods were smiling upon them.

Further junior tournaments could also be ahead, with Mildura Golf Resort and Robinvale Golf Club mentioned as prospective destinations.
