City claim first silverware for new year

DEFENDING S-League senior champions Mildura City have claimed their first pieces of silverware for the new year as the senior men’s and women’s sides took out the Rudi Horvat Round Robin Cup.

The Kenny Park club finished up with five round robin victories across all grades following Sunday’s action, with Irymple Knights victorious in the other five.

After winning their first match against Nichols Point last week, a 2-0 victory over Mildura United and a 3-0 win over Irymple Knights secured the result for the men’s side.

United impressed during their 2-all draw with Knights in week one, but were unable to hit the scoreboard this time around as Jasper Gemits and Campbell Brown found the back of the net.

Brown scored again in the win over Irymple later in the day, with established forwards Brandon Pollifrone and Nicolas Woods also scoring.

While Nichols Point played out a nil-all draw with Knights, they also finished with a 2-0 win over United via strikes from Aphisit Morris and Newton Likaveke.

Despite a 0-0 draw with Irymple Knights in their final game on Sunday, the Mildura City senior women’s side claimed the cup following a 4-0 win over Nichols Point.

Macaila Britton, player of the match in last year’s grand final victory, finished with two goals for the Citizens, Maeve Hammett also scoring a brace in the victory.

Knights and Point had played in a 1-all draw the previous week.

The new Football Federation Sunraysia S-League and J-League seasons begin this Sunday at Old Aerodrome Ovals.
