Big turnout for Merbein service

MORE than 350 people paid their respects at Merbein’s Anzac Day parade and ceremony yesterday.

There were more marchers than onlookers, as crowds made their way from the Merbein RSL to the band rotunda in Kenny Park for official proceedings.

Merbein RSL president Brian Munro said crowds were above average for both the parade and the ceremony.

It was a good turnout,”Mr Munro said.

The Sunraysia Community Choir packed out the rotunda for hymn recitals during the ceremony, and many of the songs had a refrain at the RSL following the service.

Many of Merbein RSLs Vietnam and more recent war veterans attended the service, while the club’s lone surviving World War II veteran Jack Braidie attended the Shrine of Remembrance veterans’ march in Melbourne.
