MULTIPLE premiership winner Brooke Watson will play her 150th club game against her former club this weekend, a poetic way to bring up the milestone.
Watson first arrived at Werrimull in 2007 and later spent five years at Cardross in between before donning the black and white again in 2019.
A preferred goal attack, Watson won her sixth premiership in an overtime thriller against Nangiloc last season in an outing she ranked as the best of her career.
Even after so much success, Watson said her and the team’s hunger had not faltered as they looked to go back-to-back in 2024.
“The competition is looking a lot more even this season, Cardross included,” she said.
“It’s nice that I’ll be able to play against my former team in my 150th.”
Watson won one of her six premierships with the Lions.
Also a regular feature in both hockey and basketball, Watson said her passion for sport, particularly netball, was still running strong.
“I like the teamwork involved,” she said.
A couple of close games in round 1 indeed has the competition looking even this season.
The Magpies had a narrow win over an improved Meringur outfit while Cardross defeated Gol Gol.
Both sides will be confident and the Lions will be happy to be playing at home, given Watson’s milestone.
With a recent premiership under their belt, maintaining hunger may be the test for the Magpies, while Cardross, who have already equalled their total wins from last season, will want to ride their wave.
In the match-up between Meringur and Bambill, it’s a similar narrative.
The Kangaroos failed to make finals last
season but would be encouraged by their opening performance against Werrimull.
Bambill were around the mark last season and have been strong for years but lost their first game to Nangiloc.
Over in the football, Cardross and Werrimull, who both had good wins in round 1, will battle it out at the former’s home ground.
The Magpies will want to negate the influence of Jake Healy, who opened his season with 10 goals against Meringur. Over at Lake Cullulleraine, Meringur meets reigning premiers Bambill, who despite losing some key players from last season have looked close to as good.
A-grade netball begins at noon for both games, while the opening bounce for the football is at 2.30pm.
The Cardross and Werrimull women’s football game is scheduled for 12.30pm.
