The essential car maintenance checklist every driver should follow

Keeping your car in top condition isn’t just about prolonging its lifespan — it’s about safety, performance, and avoiding unexpected repair bills. Whether you’re a seasoned motorist or a new driver, following a regular maintenance checklist can help ensure your vehicle runs smoothly all year round.

1. Engine Oil: Regular oil checks are crucial. Engine oil lubricates the moving parts and helps prevent overheating. Check the oil level monthly and top up or change as needed, following your vehicle’s manufacturer guidelines.

2. Tyre Pressure and Tread: Proper tyre inflation improves fuel efficiency and handling. Use a pressure gauge to check all tyres, including the spare, and inspect for uneven wear. Bald or cracked tyres reduce grip, especially in wet conditions.

3. Brakes: Pay attention to how your brakes feel and sound. Squealing, grinding, or reduced responsiveness may indicate worn brake pads or other issues. Have them checked promptly to avoid compromising your safety.

4. Lights and Indicators: Regularly test all lights — headlights, brake lights, reverse lights, and indicators. Visibility is essential for both you and other drivers, especially during early morning or night driving.

5. Windscreen Wipers and Washer Fluid: Replace wiper blades if they’re streaking or skipping. Ensure washer fluid is topped up, especially before long trips or during bug-heavy seasons.

6. Battery Health: Most batteries last 3–5 years, but it’s wise to monitor for signs of wear. Slow engine turnover or dimming lights can be early warnings. Keep terminals clean and corrosion-free.

7. Fluid Levels: In addition to oil, check coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid. These play a vital role in keeping your car’s systems functioning properly.

8. Regular Professional Checks: While DIY checks are important, routine car servicing ensures nothing gets overlooked. Qualified mechanics can identify early issues, update logbooks, and help maintain resale value.

Sticking to a consistent maintenance schedule not only extends your car’s life but also boosts fuel efficiency and keeps you safe on the road. A little attention now can prevent big problems down the line — making every drive smoother and more reliable.
