THE push for a heavy vehicle alternative route to access the George Chaffey Bridge is revving up with local State and Federal politicians circulating a petition advancing the cause.
This week Federal Member for Mallee Anne Webster placed the petition at several locations in the Mildura CBD.
The document also bears the name of State Member for Mildura Jade Benham.
It calls for a “new transport strategy for Mildura and a business plan to create the best option for a heavy vehicle bypass and rail upgrades”.
“The message from businesses I spoke to was clear, people want less trucks going through town,” Dr Webster said.
“It isn’t the truck driver’s fault, they need a viable alternative route that is efficient and safe.
“Truckies will gain time with a strategic long-term solution that bypasses the townships and reduces the risks.
“I have spoken with my federal ministerial colleagues and the process begins with evidence of community support and hence, the petition.
“We need to work together at local, state and federal levels of government to see this strategy fulfilled.”
Hard copies of the petition can be found mostly at businesses based around the northern end of Deakin Avenue and can also be signed online at Dr Webster’s website.
“Mildura needs robust solutions to get heavy traffic off Deakin Avenue, freight onto rail, and create safer and more efficient connections across Australia,” she said.
“Mildura’s main thoroughfare, civic and commercial centre, Deakin Avenue, needs to be protected.
“We need Deakin Avenue safer for the 12,000 other drivers who use it each day, safer for pedestrians and cyclists, while also reducing maintenance costs.”
