City keeping lid on progress

DESPITE all the recent success for Mildura City, co-coaches Nicolas Woods and Jacob Rodi are implementing a one-game-at-a-time approach for the S-League season.

After three consecutive senior men’s titles and following a 10-0 thumping against Three Colours last Friday night, players could be forgiven for being confident in themselves.

Woods however said the mentality is to remain focused on each game, continuing that trend against Mildura United on Sunday.

“From a couple of years of winning, Rodi and I are really focussed on take things one week at a time,” the City striker said.

“Especially with a result like last week you could get carried away so we’re making to treat each game as it comes and hopefully build towards another good season.

“It was a good hit out on Friday night, everyone was switched on and hopefully we can just keep building from there.

“Usually on Tuesday night the boys are a bit sore from Sunday’s game but we actually had a really good hit out with the extra two day break.”

Woods said he happy to see City’s younger talents starting to take over the team following some impressive performances.

Harry Watt was the latest to do so, scoring four second-half goals against Colours in an impressive display.

“We feel like these boys are really starting to build their confidence, and honestly they’re nearly there to take over,” Woods said.

“The great thing is these boys are willing to bide their time, they’re not getting down on themselves if they’re subbed off, it’s a really good mentality to have.

“Harry is a great example of that. He’s come off the bench for the first few games and played really well, then he’s managed to kick four goals in about 20 minutes.”

Meanwhile Colours will look to bounce back from the big defeat when they face Nichols Point on Sunday.

Ladder leaders Irymple Knights have the bye.

In the senior women’s division, defending champions Mildura City have the week off as Irymple Knights and Nichols Point go head-to-head.

Knights won their first match-up this season 2-0.
