WHATEVER tonic Wentworth’s A Grade netball side uses for their success, they could make a nifty profit if they bottled and sold it.
Undefeated in the 54 matches since their previous loss in the 2019 grand final, including the past two premierships, the girls from George Gordon Oval are well aware they are part of a special team.
Playing coach Amanda Edwards, widely regarded as one of the best players in the competition, said it’s not something that’s lost on her squad.
“I’ve said to them a few times we’re really lucky to have this kind of group together, you don’t get this all the time so let’s take advantage of that while we can,” she said.
“I think we’re all such competitive girls who all have a real love for the game.
“Everyone is hungry every week and still has that desire to keep doing what we’re doing.
“Everyone wants to get better, everyone is looking to improve in certain areas and as a coach you really can’t ask for more than that.”
Edwards was on fire under the ring during Wentworth top of the table victory against Irymple at the weekend, benefiting from the break neck speed at which her team transitions the ball from defence.
She credits her own form to the work of the defenders and mid-courters in red, white and blue, alongside for attacking partnership with Liz Rowe.
“I’m just trying to keep ticking and making sure I convert the opportunities that are created by the other girls,” she said.
“I try to lead by example as often as I can.
“Liz has really stepped up again this year, her work rate and intensity is outstanding and I think our time playing together over the last few years has really helped the development of our combination.
“I’m lucky to have her alongside me, she came into the side as a younger player but she’s really grown into an important senior netballer in our group.”
The Roos are clearly aiming for a third consecutive premiership but they won’t take any games for granted in the process.
“After Robinvale Euston this week we’ll have played everyone once and we’ll reassess and prepare for the second half of the season,” the coach said.
As the round 8 Netballer of the Round, Edwards receives $150 from Mildura Golf Resort, located at 287 Twelfth Street, Mildura.
