THE mighty Wentworth juggernaut continues to plow on, reaching the halfway mark of the SFNL A Grade netball unblemished for the third consecutive season.
The Roos had to fend off a plucky Robinvale Euston side who played the role of a thorn perfectly in the first half, but as seems customary with the reigning premiers they turned on the after burners in the second half, outscoring the home side 25-10 to run out 58-27 victors.
Wentworth still held a 33-17 lead at half-time but the home side didn’t make life easy for them. Eagles defenders Kirsten Neyland and Shakira Hingano especially competed well against taller opponents, getting hands to the ball when least expected.
Coach and shooter Georgia Giofrelle was also sinking plenty of shots from distance, but it would be all red, white and blue in the second half.
Coach and key shooter Amanda Edwards was close to unstoppable, while Christie Becker who swung into GD with Courtney Wakefield pushing up the court, showed brilliant timing with her interception and precision passing.
Again the Roos showed why they’re so dangerous with all nine players making key contributions.
“I’m really happy with how the game together,” Edwards said.
“They were quite contested early and play an unorthodox style of netball and we just struggled to get into a rhythm early but once we made some adjustments we were able to get going.
“We mixed up Courtney and Christie and that seemed to really work for us. As a coach it’s good to know we have that versatility and can make those changes when needed.
“Everyone came on and played their role for us when we needed which we were really happy with.”
Wentworth sit two games clear of Mildura on top of the ladder while Robinvale Euston are eighth with just one win – their opening contest against Imperials.
Eagles coach Georgia Giofrelle, however, believes some more victories might be around the corner.
“We tried our best but Wentworth are an unbelieveable team,” she said.
“I think the way we played gave a few of our players confidence that they can do it against the best, it’s just a matter of consistency and making sure our movement down the court is there.
“They (Neyland and Hingano) were definitely standouts for us.
“I think we could have gotten a few more wins but we missed out in some of the close ones, hopefully we can get those wins in the second half of the season.”
