Roos close gap to fourth in Millewa netball

MERINGUR are staking their claim as a team to watch in the Millewa netball finals race after an impressive win over Cardross at Lake Cullulleraine.

With wins at the weekend for Werrimull and Bambill separating the top two teams from Nangiloc and Cardross in third and fourth, the fifth-placed Roos took full advantage.

The Lions started the season brilliantly with three consecutive wins but are now 4-4 following the 38-30 defeat to Meringur.

Lakayla Pettit, Teagan Pettigrew and Fionna Wright all starred for the victors, while Christina Villiva, Tamara Hamence and Charlotte McKendrick were named best for the Lions.

Defending champions Werrimull secured a hard-fought six-goal win over last year’s grand final adversaries Nangiloc, defeating them for the second time this season.

A win for the Demons on their home court would have allowed them to leapfrog the Magpies into the top two, but the visitors proved too strong in the 43-37 win.

Aislinn Campbell, Cassie Morris and Anna Thomson all played strong roles for Werrimull, while Gabby Gardner, Maddy Price and Ginine Sluiter were best on for Nangiloc.

Bambill have closed on the ladder leaders with their percentage following a 15-goal win over Gol Gol.

The Saints, who have remained undefeated since a round 1 loss, faced a challenge from the winless Hawks but earned a 51-36 victory, led by Ebony Roberts.

Sam Garraway and Erin Hird also performed strongly for Bambill, while Suzi Nitschke, Meg Hammond and Sophie Lanyon were best in brown in gold.
