Why you should never ignore that problem tree in your yard

Trees are a beautiful and valuable part of any property — offering shade, character, and environmental benefits. But not all trees are assets. When a tree becomes damaged, diseased, or unstable, it can quickly shift from being a feature to a serious hazard.

It’s easy to put off dealing with a questionable tree, especially if it doesn’t appear dangerous at first glance. However, ignoring the signs can lead to costly consequences. Falling branches, root interference, and full tree collapse can damage your home, vehicles, fences, or neighbouring properties. In some cases, the risks go beyond property — they pose real threats to personal safety.

Common warning signs include large dead branches, cracks in the trunk, leaning growth, fungus or decay, and sudden changes in leaf coverage. Even trees that look relatively healthy on the outside can have hidden internal weaknesses. That’s why regular inspections by professionals are important, particularly after storms or high winds.

Roots are another concern. Invasive root systems can interfere with plumbing, damage foundations, and lift paving. If you’re seeing raised soil, cracked concrete, or drainage issues, a nearby tree might be the cause. Acting early can prevent more extensive damage and disruption.

There are also legal responsibilities to consider. As a property owner, you may be liable if a neglected tree causes damage or injury. Insurance companies may not cover incidents if a tree was known to be hazardous and no action was taken.

Prompt tree removal by trained professionals ensures that risks are assessed correctly and handled safely. Whether it’s pruning, partial removal, or taking out the tree entirely, expert arborists use the right equipment and techniques to get the job done without putting people or property in harm’s way.

While trees are worth preserving whenever possible, sometimes the safest and most responsible option is to let one go. If you’ve got a tree causing concern, don’t wait for a storm to force your hand. A proactive approach can save money, stress, and potential disaster in the long run.
