Six-shooter aiming high with new club

SIX strikes in a single soccer match represents a good day’s work for any player.

While this isn’t a personal record for Irymple Knights forward Jordan Cox, who has scored an insane 11 goals before, he has enjoyed making a contribution at his new S-League club.

The 24-year-old from Broken Hill relocated to Mildura for work a few years ago and after multiple seasons with Nichols Point has joined the side from Henshilwood Reserve this year.

Knights are 5-1 to start the new season and top of the ladder via goal difference, with a loss to last year’s grand final rivals Mildura City the only blemish, but have hit their straps in recent weeks.

Cox has contributed eight goals in his past two matches as Irymple recorded a 10-0 win against Nichols Point before a 12-0 victory over Three Colours last Friday under lights.

“It was a pretty good day,” the striker said.

“It’s been really good coming into Irymple, the boys have made it really easy to come in and feel part of it all.

“It’s a pretty young group of guys but you can see (coach) Phil (Karallis) gets around everyone and gets them pumped up.”

The right footer, who can also strike on his non-preferred leg, said the world game was always his preferred sport growing up in the Silver City.

Cox, who grew up a Liverpool supporter thanks to his pop’s influence, hopes he and his teammates can break through for Knights first title win since 2017.

“I started when I was really young and have played ever since,” Cox said.

“I actually started as a midfielder until one year playing A Grade in Broken Hill our team didn’t have a forward. I was pushed up there and I’ve basically been there since.

“Obviously the hope to to go ahead of Mildura City, we feel like we can get there, but we have to make sure we get past Mildura United this weekend.”

While Irymple play Mildura United on Sunday, title rivals City go head-to-head with Three Colours.

Meanwhile, Nichols Point take on Mildura City in Sunday’s Senior Women’s fixture.
