Young Mallee fighter getting noticed

CHARLIE Cooper’s exploits in the boxing ring, including a recent victory at the Australian Club Championships in Adelaide where he stepped up a division, have been rewarded.

Nominated by Ladd’s Boxing Club, the up-and-coming fighter has been selected as the 2024 Community Bank Merbein & District 97.9 Triple M Northern Mallee Sports Star of the Year for the month of May.

The club championships are an annual event, which is open to boxing clubs from all over Australia and internationally to compete.

Cooper’s bout at this tournament was a test of his abilities, as he stepped up to a higher division for an Elite belt.

His dedication and persistence were rewarded with a win in the Elite Open 51kg category.

Cooper also has competed in three other state tournaments in Adelaide and one in Melbourne already this year, winning all bouts as a 50-52kg Youth open fighter.

The fighter was selected on the 2024 South Australian Futures team and he travels regularly to Adelaide to attend the training camps for this team.

Cooper also has been selected in the SA State team for the second year in a row to compete at the Under-19 Australian titles, to be held in Perth this month.

As the May winner, Cooper receives a voucher sponsored by Intersport and is now eligible for the 2024 Community Bank Merbein & District 97.9 Triple M Northern Mallee Sports Star of the Year awards to be held on Friday, February 21, 2025, at the Club Da Vinci, Mildura.
