City slick in enemy territory

MILDURA City are well on the way to securing senior men’s and women’s titles in Football Federation Sunraysia S-League with five rounds remaining in the season.

City’s senior men are odds-on to claim a fourth consecutive premiership after downing closest rivals Irymple Knights for the second time this season, winning 5-1 on Sunday at Henshilwood Reserve.

A first-half hat-trick for striker Nicolas Woods put City well in control by the long break, and another goal from Dominic Ghidinelli four minutes into the second half secured the result.

Knights made sure the visitors wouldn’t escape with a clean sheet when emerging talent Kieran Burrows scored in the 55th minute, however his fellow Sunraysia under-18 representative Campbell Brown added another for City.

The ladder leaders are undefeated as they head into the final cycle of fixtures.

City’s senior women, meanwhile, are on the cusp of claiming their eighth S-League title from the past nine seasons after defeating Knights 6-0 at the basin.

Lillee Driscoll and Ava Gemits both scored goals in each half, while Macaila Britton and Isabella Palamara each struck in the second half within a three-minute period.

Victory against Nichols Point this week should guarantee the title.

In action at Soccer Park, Mildura United earned their second victory of the campaign, taking down Nichols Point 3-1.

Tien Dat Nguyen opened the scoring for United seven minutes in, however Charles Engrand would equalise 20 minutes later.

A draw looked like it was on the cards heading into the final 10 minutes before Ali Ehsani and Yuna Rurageze each found the back of the net late to grab the victory.
