City shivers as winter returns

MILDURA was blanketed in a sea of fog on Sunday morning with a return to cooler conditions following a run of higher-than-average maximum temperatures to end the working week.

There was low visibility throughout the region until mid-morning, when the 10am QantasLink flight from Mildura to Melbourne was able to depart on schedule.

Wind gusts of almost 50km/h were recorded about 2pm on Saturday with light drizzle totalling 1mm making outdoor activities uncomfortable.

While Saturday’s top temperature reached 17 degrees by noon, it then dropped suddenly to 13.6 degrees within 30 minutes with the apparent, or “feels like”, temperature down to 8.5 degrees as the gusts intensified.

The brisk snap followed spring-like temperatures almost 10 degrees above the overall maximum average for August of 17.4 degrees, with 26.4 degrees on Thursday, 25.7 on Wednesday, 23.9 on Tuesday and 23.7 on Monday last week.

More showers are forecast for much of this week with up to 3mm on Tuesday the highest forecast tally.

Mildura has recorded just 5.8mm of rain so far this month compared to the overall mean of 25.3mm.

Maximum temperatures are likely to remain in the 20s throughout this week as winter nears a welcome end.
