FIRE crews were put to the test on Saturday as they worked through extreme weather to contain a number of spot fires along the Calder Highway.

Firefighters said a faulty wheel bearing on a trailer was responsible for starting the fire, which ignited at six spots along an 11km stretch of highway between Ouyen and Sea Lake.
